Stopping a Killer

Three amazing volunteers make up this week’s show. Rayme Elliott lost her son Logan to a heart defect and leads a movement called “Moms with Heart.” A simple test could have detected her son’s heart condition and his life may have been saved. Due to Rayme’s tireless efforts a law has been passed that requires newborns in CA and 21 other states to have a pulse oximetry screening. The American Heart Association is the second largest funder of pediatric cardiac research after the federal government and the #1 non-profit funding pediatric research. During the past year the AHA spent almost $7.94 million on new research awards related to children’s heart disease. If you want to participate in helping with Rayme’s cause, go to the Santa Barbara Heartwalk site at sbheartwalk.com, look up Team Logan and you can make a donation right there on her page.

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer of Americans.
Two other tireless volunteers–Michele Talkington, and Ron Lafrican, were also interviewed on this week’s show. Michele is Heart Walk Co-Chair for this year’s walk and she urges everyone in our community to participate. Ron Lafrican is a champion of work site wellness at Cottage Health System and he discusses small steps that businesses can make to have a “Fit Friendly Worksite.” The Heart Walk will take place at Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort and festivities begin at 8:30 a.m. To sign up, go to http://www.sbheartwalk.com
